Peeling fruit for juice smoothies
Should I be peeling the apples and pears I use for my juice smoothies? If I don't peel them, the skins never seem to really pulverize well. I used to use a commercial juicer but it seemed like I was throwing away half the fruit after the machine pulled out the juice.
If you use organic fruits and vegetables, you don't have to peel them, just scrub them well. Sometimes the peel and the part right underneath the peel have a high concentration of nutrients that you don't want to lose. I chop my fruit up before I put it in the blender so the skin is already in small pieces.
I agree with Healthnut, and if you use a commercial juicer, don't throw away that pulp! It's got lots of fiber and some leftover nutrients. I usually bake mine into muffins (use any carrot muffin recipe).
