Crying after surgery

My mom had surgery for "woman troubles" and woke up seriously freaked out. She was bawling. The couldn't explain why, she was just heaving and sobbing. It was really an ordeal. But the doctors said it happens sometimes after surgery. Is there anything that can help this?

I've seen this on surgery tv shows a lot. I have never had experience with it myself, but I did notice once, when I was job shadowing at a veterinary hospital, that dogs and cats wake up from having the "snip snip" surgery in ALL KINDS of bad moods. They actually told me not to pet those dogs or cats because they might bite me just because of the weird post-anesthesia attitude they all had. On some primal level, our bodies/minds know how unnatural surgery is and I think the crying is just a result of that awareness.

I've heard that patients that go into surgery happy or calm wake up easier. Sometimes being happy before surgery can be basically impossible. For instance, I'm sure going into surgery for breast enlargement is a totally different feeling than having exploratory surgery to find out if you have cancer. However, if you use meditation, or breathwork, and even some prayer, it might help calm your nerves before surgery, making for a happy post-surgery.
