Vervain is a member of the Verbena family, which was native to the Mediterranean area but now grows throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Vervain has been used as a folk remedy for a wide range of disorders, even though the Food and Drug Administration calls its safety "undefined." Active components come from the leaves and flowering heads of European vervain. This herb is available in capsule form and has been used as an aphrodisiac and also to expel mucus from the lungs, to cause sweating, to induce vomiting, and to relieve pain. Vervain also has been suggested as an herbal treatment for:
