Bad Cholesterol is Good for Muscles

New research shows that having higher levels of “bad cholesterol” in your blood may make it easier for you to build your muscles. In a recent study published in the Journal of Gerontology, participants who completed vigorous workouts were found to gain the most muscle mass if they had higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

Cholesterol is a fat-based hormone with a large number of functions in the human body, so the idea that eliminating all cholesterol makes a person healthier has never been founded. But it has been thought that the high-density lipoprotein (the so-called “HDL”) was all the body needed for its internal processes. LDL has been known primarily as the substance that forms aterial plaque and causes heart attacks.
