Cigarette smoking is the leading contributor to preventable deaths in the United States. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than 440,000 deaths in the United States each year can be attributed to tobacco use, including more than 175,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Smokers also face very high risks of developing respiratory diseases that have no cure, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer.

Statistics show that the lifespan of male smokers is reduced by an average of 13.2 years due to smoking-related diseases; the average reduction is 14.5 years for female smokers. Also at risk are individuals exposed to secondhand smoke. Such "involuntary" smoking is responsible for approximately 35,000 deaths annually.
