Cognitive therapy for stress

Helping people learn to cope.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy is a way of helping people to cope with stress and emotional problems. The concept is based on the premise that the way we think about things affects how we feel emotionally. For example, if you wave to a friend on the opposite side of the street and they don't wave back to you, the way you think about your friend will affect how you feel about the situation. If you think your friend is avoiding you, you might feel sad or angry. If you think your friend is just being absent-minded and didn't notice you, you might think it funny.

Cognitive therapy emphasizes that our feelings are not automatic reactions to events, but are shaped by the ideas we already have. Cognitive therapy involves talking about the connections between how we think, how we feel, and how we behave. It particularly concentrates on unrealistic ideas that might undermine our self-confidence and make us feel depressed or anxious. Examining these connections can help us work out different ways of thinking and behaving that will help us cope better.

Toxic shock prevention

What causes toxic shock syndrome?

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

Toxic Shock Syndrome is a rare but potentially fatal condition caused by a massive staphylococcus or streptococcus infection. Anyone of any age can get TSS; the germs that cause this condition are found everywhere and can contaminate wounds that come into contact with unclean hands or other surfaces.

The first diagnosed cases of TSS happened in women using high-absorbency tampons; that particular type of tampon has been taken off the market, but tampons still represent a Toxic Shock Syndrome risk. Women should wash hands thoroughly before handling or inserting tampons; store them in a dry place (not the bathroom); use only clean, tightly packaged tampons (not one that has lost its wrapping in a purse, for example); use the lowest absorbency possible; alternate between internal and external sanitary protection, such as sanitary pads; and change tampons frequently during the menstrual period.

Toxic shock symptoms include fever, low blood pressure, a sunburn-like rash, vomiting and diarrhea; anyone with such symptoms should consult a doctor immediately. If the patient is a woman wearing a tampon, diaphragm, or birth control sponge, those items should be removed immediately. Toxic Shock Syndrome can often be treated successfully with antibiotics, but shock can cause permanent organ damage.

Depression responds to acupuncture

Study shows it is effective as drugs.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Acupuncture may fight depression as well as drugs

Acupuncture may be as effective in treating depression as popping a pill, according to new MRI studies.

Antidepressants are among the most prescribed medications in the U.S. to treat mild to moderate depression. But functional MRI tests have revealed that acupuncture is as effective as the most-prescribed anti-depressants at helping the brain release dopamine and serotonin, the chemicals that control happiness, and combat depression.

Acupuncture therapists at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine, who cited the MRI studies, said acupuncture might be an alternative medicine treatment for someone with mild to moderate depression who is pregnant or no longer wants to rely on pharmaceuticals.

Iridology: The eyes speak

And they talk about your health.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Interview with Iridologist

Susan Laing is a Naturopathic Iridologist and is based in Leeds, England UK. She also specializes in Raw Food and runs workshops. Susan is also training to become an Ashtanga Yoga teacher.

David Hestrin: What is an iridologist?

Susan Laing: In the hands of a really well trained iridologist, we can look at the frontal aspect of the eye, which means it`s the iris we`re looking at and the dynamics of the pupil and also the sclera. And when we look at this part of the eye with a certain amount of magnification (times sixty) on the iriscope, and we`re able to take photographs - hopefully we`re able to tell quite a lot about a person. And when we see quite a lot about a person - we mean that we can tell about the physical aspect of the body and also the emotional and spiritual side of the body, and it`s a lot of clues you can use if you`re hoping to treat somebody with imbalances in the body. So you`re able to choose the right herbs, and we`re able to choose the right nutrition for that person, and we`re able to pick up food intolerances and also vitamins and mineral deficiencies and so on. So it`s also used as a preventative measure. So iridology is really a diagnostic. It really helps to diagnose imbalances in the body.

Rheumatoid arthritis remedy

Chinese herb offers relief to some.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Chinese herb may bring rheumatoid arthritis relief

A recent medical study demonstrated that a standardized extract of a plant used in Chinese medicine is substantially better than the medication sulfasalazine for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints, often leading to complete joint destruction, pain, swelling, disability and increased mortality. There is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis but treatment is focused on reducing inflammation.

In traditional medicine, steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen) and some chemotherapy medications are the mainstay of therapy. More powerful medications, like sulfasalazine, significantly affect the body's ability to produce inflammation and are increasingly used.

Do statins cause diabetes and heart disease?

I recall reading a scientific paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association  a number of years ago by Dr. David Jenkins from the University of Toronto. He showed that using a combination of soy, fiber, almonds, and plant sterols (cholesterol-lowering fats) could lower cholesterol levels as much as statin medications.(i) Diet can lower cholesterol as much as statins--a surprise to many but common in my practice. Using a comprehensive approach of diet and lifestyle change, I routinely see effects that are more powerful than any medication. That was not why the article struck me. It was a finding buried in the text of the paper.

Laugh your weight off

Laughter experts Dr. Lee S. Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan have discovered that laughing helps maximize many functions of various body systems. Berk and his colleagues were the first to establish that laughter helps optimize the hormones in the endocrine system, including decreasing the levels of cortisol and epinephrine, which lead to stress reduction. They have also shown that laughter has a positive effect on modulating components of the immune system.

Their studies have shown that repetitious “mirthful laughter,” causes the body to respond in a way similar to moderate physical exercise. Mirthful laughter enhances your mood, decreases stress hormones, enhances immune activity, lowers bad cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, and raises good cholesterol (HDL).

Who needs hand therapy?

Patients with certain ailments might benefit.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy treats patients with various hand and upper extremity injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome, brachial plexus injuries, and tendon repairs. A hand therapist provides assessment and treatment of individuals of all ages with diagnoses related to the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or multiple joints in the upper quarter of the body.

Hand therapy helps a patient regain maximum use of his or her hand after injury, surgery, or the onset of disease. A hand therapist is first trained as an occupational or physical therapist, and then receives additional training in ways to teach exercises, apply modalities, and create custom splints to help the hand heal and protect it from additional injury. Hand therapy may be useful for:

  • Fractures / dislocations

  • Flexor / extensor tendon injuries

Prevent carpal tunnel this way

At the workplace, workers can do on-the-job conditioning, perform stretching exercises, take frequent rest breaks, wear splints to keep wrists straight, and use correct posture and wrist position. Wearing fingerless gloves can help keep hands warm and flexible. Workstations, tools and tool handles, and tasks can be redesigned to enable the worker's wrist to maintain a natural position during work. Jobs can be rotated among workers. Employers can develop programs in ergonomics, the process of adapting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities of workers. However, research has not conclusively shown that these workplace changes prevent the occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Fungal Skin Infections

Fungi are prevalent in our environment, and fungal skin infections can occur as a result of being exposed to fungi. Certain types of fungi can infect the topmost layer of skin causing it to become red and creating mild scaling and even itching. If the skin becomes extremely irritated, it can become blistered as well. Prescription or over-the-counter antifungal medications may help, and nutritional support is important in healing fungal skin infections.

Radiation poisoning prevention

What to do if your area becomes radioactive.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Radiation Poisoning

The nuclear reactor crisis in Japan was a red flag for many Americans who worry that a similar radiation catastrophe could happen in the U.S.

What can you do to help protect yourself and your family against radiation poisoning, if it ever comes to that?

IODINE: iodine tablets are important in cases of radiation poisoning because radioactive ions will bind to any iodine receptor sites that are vacant, and many people in the US are iodine deficient. iodine is particularly protective of the thyroid gland. You can paint liquid iodine on your skin, and it will be absorbed into your body. Some experts suggest painting it directly over the thyroid gland.

ANTIOXIDANT VITAMINS: radiation poisoning causes a cascade of free radicals in the body, which can wreak havoc with every organ. The most protective antioxidants are Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

ANTIOXIDENT NUTRIENTS: ALA (alpha lipoleic acid), selenium, and Co-enzyme Q10 are antioxidant substances that can help clean heavy metals from the body. ALA is especially beneficial in protecting the brain, liver, kidneys, spleen, and reproductive organs. Q10 is especially protective of the heart

Acidophilus is a source of friendly bacteria known as probiotics, which encourage a healthy balance in your digestive system, boost immunity and increase resistance to infections. Beneficial bacteria in the gut produce Vitamin K, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream. Many health care professionals recommend taking acidophilus alongside oral antibiotics, because antibiotics can destroy healthy bacteria and lead to fungal infections such as thrush. Conditions that can be helped by acidophilus supplements include diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroenteritis. The best source is live "bio" yogurt, but acidophilus is also available in liquid and capsule form (which should be kept refrigerated). Acidophilus is harmless and can be taken daily with food in unlimited amounts.

The website stated: "Taking control of her deteriorating health, she took a series of blood tests and hair analysis revealing abnormally high levels of metal contents many of which came from unhealthy foods and her overexposure to cosmetics."

It added that Swift is known as an artist who can make the most of her clients' natural beauty and for her commitment to organic skin care products.

Orlando Bloom is a big fan of the makeup artists work, according to the website, which said he has commented on how she makes his supermodel girlfriend Miranda Kerr look "beautiful and glowing" after treatment.

Another celebrity makeup artist Lina Hanson told TreeHugger.com how using natural skin care products can be hugely beneficial to people's complexion.

After-dinner java a bad idea

Enjoying dessert after a large meal is obviously bad for your blood sugar—but recent research shows that drinking  a cup of after-dinner coffee may be just as bad.

Researchers at the University of Guelph found that people who ate a high-fat dinner and then drank a cup of caffeinated coffee had 33 percent higher blood sugar levels than those who ate the same meal but skipped the coffee.

The report, which was published in the Journal of Nutrition, attributed the blood glucose spike to an interaction between the coffee, the fat, and the hormones that control blood sugar. Fat combined with caffeine appears to interrupt the communication between the intestines and the pancreas, according to researchers.

Fumitory folklore

Legendary herb dates back centuries.

Amplify’d from www.altmeds.com

Fumitory folklore

The name "fumitory" is said to be derived either from the fact that its whitish, blue-green colour gives it the appearance of smoke rising from the ground, or, according to Pliny, because the juice of the plant brings on such a flow of tears that the sight becomes dim as with smoke, and hence its reputed use in affections of the eye.

According to the ancient exorcists, when the plant is burned, its smoke has the power of expelling evil spirits, it having been used for this purpose in the famous geometrical gardens of St. Gall. There is a legend that the plant was produced, not from seed, but from vapours arising out of the earth.
