Selenium

Selenium, one of the macrominerals, is found in bran, broccoli, onions, tomatoes, tuna, and wheat germ. It is most effective when taken with Vitamin E. Selenium is an essential component of a key antioxidant enzyme that protects the body by helping to prevent the formation of free radicals. Along with Vitamin E, it assists with metabolic processes and aids in normal growth as well as fertility. Some selenium compounds are antifungal and are used in dandruff shampoos. Diseases prevented or improved by the therapeutic benefits of adequate amounts of dietary selenium include acne, atherosclerosis (preventive), cancer, cardiovascular disease, cervical diseases, herpes simplex, high cholesterol, impaired immune function, infertility, lupus, macular degeneration, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, recurrent infections, and shingles. (Information from the Herbal Information Center & Vitamin Directory).
