Calciferol

Calciferol, also known as Vitamin D, is a fat-soluble vitamin found in ten forms, named D1 through D10. The two most important sources of Vitamin D are D2 and D3. These are found in cod liver, fish liver oils, butter, egg yolk, liver, herring, mackerel, sardines, and salmon. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and for the regulation of phosphorus metabolism, all of which are vital for healthy bones and teeth. A childhood deficiency of Vitamin D is may cause rickets; in adults, such a deficiency may lead to osteomalacia (the softening of the bones). It is important for women to take calciferol during menopause to maintain healthy bones.
