Biotin, a water-soluble vitamin, is the cofactor required by enzymes  involved in carboxylation reactions (e.g. acetyl-CoA carboxylase and pyruvate carboxylase). Biotin is found in numerous foods and also is synthesized by intestinal bacteria; therefore, deficiencies of the vitamin are rare and are generally seen only after long antibiotic therapies that deplete the intestinal fauna, or following excessive consumption of raw eggs. Egg white protein can bind to biotin, preventing intestinal absorption.
