Lipoic Acid

Lipoic acid is an organic compound and important antioxidant that works to extend the effects of other antioxidants. It is found in organ meats, broccoli, spinach, and potatoes. A relatively new substance in terms of research, lipoic acid already has proven to be an efficient antioxidant against hydroxyl, peroxyl, ascorbyl, and chromanoxyl radicals. Its sulfur bond is the reactive part of the molecule. Because lipoic acid is active on both lipids and tissue fluids, it is protective of both vitamin E and vitamin C. Lipoic acid also protects SOD, catalase, and glutathione, all of which are important in liver detoxification activities. Lipoic acid also has an important role as a cofactor in aerobic metabolism, which produces energy for the body.
