Indigo is a substance made from the leaves and branches of a group of plants called Indigofera. It is also known as Indian indigo or Quindai. Many of these plants are grown worldwide, but only a few types grow in the United States. Indigo Tinctoria is the source of natural blue indigo dye and also is an active ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine used to treat chronic myelocytic leukemia. Indigo is available in tablets and as a powder. It has been used as an herbal treatment for bleeding disorders, boils, carbuncles (subcutaneous boils), diabetes, fever, hemorrhoids, inflammation, infant seizures, mumps, ovarian cancer, pain, scorpion bites, and stomach cancer. Indigo can be used to induce vomiting and is thought to purify the liver.
