Oleander is a popular ornamental scrub native to the Mediterranean region that grows throughout the southern and southwestern United States and California. Reaching about 20 feet tall, it has long, narrow, pointed leaves and produces small clusters of red, pink, or white blossoms. Herbalists around the world have used oleander's active components, obtained mostly from the leaves. Oleander has been used to treat a variety of health problems including asthma, cancer, corns, heart problems, menstrual problems, seizures, and skin problems, and to stimulate bowel movements. It also has been used to cause vomiting, to induce abortion, to repel insects, and to kill parasites. But despite the long history of medicinal use, oleander is highly poisonous and NOT recommended for use; swallowing just one leaf could kill a healthy individual.
