Does bittersweet nightshade work?

Bittersweet nightshade is a vine-like plant. It is in the same family as tomatoes and potatoes. The stem is used to make medicine.

  • Acne, itchy skin, boils, broken skin, warts, arthritis-like pain, nail bed swelling, eczema, promoting water loss (diuretic), pain relief, and calming nervous excitement.


How does Bittersweet Nightshade work? It is not known how bittersweet nightshade might work.

Are there safety concerns? The stem of bittersweet nightshade might be safe for most adults. The leaves or berries are UNSAFE, and are very poisonous. Symptoms of poisoning include: scratchy throat, headache, dizziness, enlarged eye pupils, trouble speaking, low body temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding in the stomach or intestines, convulsions, slowed blood circulation and breathing, and even death.

Bittersweet nightshade is UNSAFE for children. Some children have died from eating unripe bittersweet nightshade berries.

Do not use bittersweet nightshade if:

  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

  • You have a stomach or intestine condition such as an ulcer or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
