Callouses

Callouses (or calluses) are thickened areas of skin that develop in response to repeated pressure. Foot callouses are often caused when the bones of the foot press against the inside of a shoe or two foot bones press together. This often occurs on the largest and smallest toes. Callouses can develop on fingers from holding a writing implement for long periods of time.
Callouses can sometimes be removed by soaking the area in warm water, then using a foot file, pumice stone, or facial scrubber to gently rub away excess skin. Follow by moisturizing the area. Do not attempt to cut or shave callouses.
Foot callouses can be prevented by wearing shoes that give the feet adequate room. Finger callouses can be prevented by using cushioned writing implements. Excellent nutrition will help keep skin soft and pliable.
