Turmeric is a perennial from the ginger family and is harvested commercially in India, China, Indonesia, and other tropical countries. It is available as capsules, powdered spice, dried rhizome, extract, oil, or tincture. Turmeric has a long and varied history in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Indian (Ayurvedic) Medicine. More recently, the herb has been investigated as a treatment for certain types of cancer. The active ingredient, curcumin, is an antioxidant that retards food spoilage. Turmeric has been suggested as an herbal remedy to treat:

  • Atherosclerosis (plaque building in the arteries)
  • Bacterial infections
  • Bloody urine
