Vitamin B-9


 

Vitamin B-9, also known as folic acid, helps synthesize nucleic acids such as RNA and DNA. This water-soluble vitamin is necessary for red blood cell production, growth, and reproduction. Vitamin B-9 is also essential during pregnancy and reduces the risk of neural tube defects (birth defects affecting the brain and/or spinal cord). The U.S. Public Health Service recommends 400 mcg a day of folic acid for women of childbearing age.
