Cancer

Cancer is a disease in which cells in some area of the body begin to multiply out of control, sometimes invading neighboring tissue and spreading to distant areas of the body. The proliferation of non-functioning cancer cells can interfere with the function of any organ, leading to complications and sometimes death. Most cancers form one of more lesions called tumors, but some forms of cancer, such as leukemia, do not. Medical science has not yet conquered all forms of cancer, but has developed effective treatments for some types. Tumors are often removed through surgery or shrunk through radiation. Chemotherapy, the administration of medications that affect cancer cells, can destroy tumors or halt their growth. Regular health care screenings, such as mammograms and Pap smears for women, and prostate exams for men, can often detect cancers in the early, most treatable stage.
