How this therapy may help

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis. This therapy should be performed only by a well-trained and experienced health care professional. The session begins with a relaxation exercise, which helps the patient shut out everyday concerns and distractions. The patient may then be asked to focus on a particular object, to follow the therapist's fingertips, or just to breathe slowly and steadily.

Once a trance-like state is achieved, the therapist offers suggestions designed to help heal the patient. The goal of the therapy is to foster positive thoughts and feelings and to activate the self-healing powers of both the mind and body. This therapy is typically used to alleviate chronic pain and psychosomatic illnesses, and to treat moderate depression, asthma, addictions, allergies, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. Treatment usually requires five to fifteen sessions. Some insurers now partially cover the cost of hypnotherapy.
