Designer intestinal bacteria on the way?

Each person has a collection of intestinal bacteria, and the proportions of bacteria are unique to that individual, according to researchers at Washington University. When any individual’s bacterial profile becomes unbalanced, bowel disease, malnutrition, and obesity can result.

Those researchers have now determined a way to de-code and reproduce a person’s unique bacterial profile in the laboratory, so drugs and nutrients can be tested in an environment that closely duplicates that person’s gut. Researchers from the Center for Genome Sciences and Systems Biology say this discovery may have opened the door to a whole new type of medical research.
