Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, in response to darkness. Melatonin helps to regulate the body's sleep-wake cycles. The amount of this hormone produced by the body seems to decrease with age, which scientists believe may explain why young people have fewer sleeping problems than older people. Melatonin is available as a supplement. According to Newsweek Magazine, "Studies suggest that ... (melatonin) supplements can hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills." Melatonin may also improve mood, strengthen the immune system, and reduce free radicals in the body. Current research is underway to determine its effect as an anti-oxidant, imuno-modulator in cancer, and treatment for delayed sleep-phase disorders and jet lag. Because melatonin can cause drowsiness, it should not be taken before driving or other activities that require alertness.
