Lavender

Lavender is a shrub with purple flowers; it is highly regarded for its classic fragrance, which is used in soap, air fresheners, and potpourris. But this English garden herb also is an important medicinal herb. Originally, oil distilled from the flower was used as an insect repellent, to protect clothes and stored linens from moths. Lavender oil also has applications in aromatherapy as a stimulant and tonic, sometimes recommended for relief of intestinal gas. It also is used topically to disinfect wounds and assist in healing burns, acne, and scalp conditions. Applied as a compress, lavender oil may provide relief from neuralgic pains, rheumatism, sprains, stiff muscles, and sore joints. Lavender is an aromatic nervine herb whose scent can be used as an aromatherapeutic treatment for restlessness, insomnia, circulatory disorders, anxiety, headache, depression, and stress. As a skin care herb, lavender may help reduce oiliness and puffy eyes, as well as helping skin maintain a balanced, healthy texture.
